October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and I’m sure there isn’t one of you reading this that hasn’t been affected by it in some way. Maybe you went through it personally, maybe a close family member went through it, or even a close friend.  Far too many people face and fight breast cancer, for myself, I watched my mom suffer through it.

And yet, she never acted as if she was suffering. Her attitude was as if she didn’t really have cancer. She was just being strong and doing “what needed to be done.”

Having a double mastectomy is something that many women have gone through including the chemo and/or radiation that can go along with the diagnosis. I’m grateful that my Mom didn’t have to go through either one of typical treatments from oncologists, but she did still have her breasts removed. And then chose reconstructive surgery as well.

Through the process it seemed she remained pretty calm and laughed about it more than cried. I guess there is a fine line there, but I’m glad she chose laughter for the most part. I believe her faith, attitude and mental disposition helped get her through this season and truly helped her healing process. Our bodies respond to our thoughts.

Speaking of thoughts….

So, how do we fight against breast cancer before it becomes an issue?

The National Foundation for Cancer Research sums it up by saying this: “The overall goal is to eat food which can support our bodies healthy functioning and reduce our overall stress.”

What are those foods?

Eating a whole food, plant-based diet helps to cut out the carcinogen-loaded and cancer creating foods, while balancing the vitamins and nutrients your body needs. It also provides a plethora of antioxidant-rich nutrients. These two simple changes are the biggest effects on preventing breast cancer.

  • Legumes
  • Peppers
  • Green leafy vegetables (kale, Swiss chard, beet greens, spinach, romaine, lettuce, etc.)
  • Lemons
  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Eggplant
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Shallot
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Parsley
  • Pumpkin
  • Squash
  • Cucumber

The list goes on, but when we are loading our bodies up on whole, pure, nutrient-rich plants, it has exactly what it needs to fight off infection and disease.
