5 tips for keeping active in the Winter season
- One of the simplest things you can do is add walking into your shopping outings. Park as far away as possible from the store – you get extra steps in! Do a few power laps before beginning your shopping at the mall. Walk the perimeters of the building while window shopping. This will not only help you burn calories, but it will give you an idea of what stores have sales and you might see that “perfect gift” in the window when walking by that you wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
- Find a short and simple (no equipment) routine that you can do before leaving your bedroom in the morning. I have an amazing routine that you can get here or you can download my app to get some great routines right at your fingertips! It doesn’t have to be anything intense or hours long. 6-7 minutes is reasonable and easy to add into your morning routine.
- Enjoy an outdoor activity. Hit the slopes, take a winter hike, go caroling, walk to a nearby friend’s house, find opportunities to walk, and be outside when you would typically drive or ride.
- Try something new. Many gyms and community centers offer various fitness classes – it can be a great opportunity to meet others, learn a new way to workout, and break up the monotonous winter.
- Don’t give up! Miss a day? Don’t worry – it doesn’t mean your whole routine is garbage. It doesn’t mean that everything you’ve worked for has now become meaningless. It’s just a day. Get your workout in just before bed (while you’re watching your favorite T.V. show) or whatever it might be. The important thing is to mindfully fit in some sort of movement and physical body care every day.
