Every step counts, especially if you’re focused on getting in 10 thousand of them. 10 thousand steps (which is about 5 miles) is the daily magic number for most people on a healthy lifestyle plan. Now, if you aren’t currently getting in 10K steps or more – don’t worry. Like I said earlier…every step counts.
The key is to make a conscious effort not to be sedentary. Now…I know, This can seem difficult if you have a job that requires you to be behind a desk. But, standing and treadmill work stations are becoming more and more popular. Consider one as an option for you.
A good strategy, so you aren’t overwhelmed with the 10k steps, is to break them up. Maybe you could Start with 3K steps in the morning. Get in 3K at lunch. Another 1K while walking around the office and another 3K after dinner.
Also, it’s always important to monitor your steps to keep you accountable AND motivated. So, get an activity monitor – not just a pedometer. This will help you see all the movement you get in daily as well as walking.
Find a walking buddy! One of the added perks of a walking buddy is that the time flies by, especially if you’re chatting it up the whole time. If your walking buddy isn’t around…listen to music or a podcast that interests you.
One last tip…Always keep a pair of walking shoes in your car – not just for your lunch breaks. That way if you ever find yourself with a little extra time then you’ll be prepared.
