Summertime is a great time for self-reflection. Part of self-reflection is assessing the status of and improving your mental health. You can improve your mental health in several ways. Here’s how…
IMPROVE CLARITY
Mental health clings a lot to your mental clarity. Have you ever felt like you were losing your mind not being able to remember something, or feeling fuzzy?
That fuzzy feeling most likely stems from the foods that you’re eating. That’s right, your diet can have a huge hand in mental state and clarity.
Foods that will help clear your mind:
- Blueberries
- Avacado
- Green leafy vegetables
- Salmon
- Water
- Flax Seeds
- Nuts
You don’t have to live in a “fog” anymore. Cut out these foods:
- Gluten
- Refined carbs and sugar
- Histamines (alcohol, dairy products, shellfish, and chocolate)
- Caffeine
- Alcohol
- Artificial Sweeteners
- Dairy
GET YOUR WORKOUT IN
Working out gives more benefits than just stronger muscles. One of the greatest benefits of working out on a regular basis is the improvement that it has on your mental health. Exercise decreases symptoms of both depression and anxiety and is a scientifically proven mood booster. Physical activity kicks up endorphin levels that are produced by the brain and spinal cord that produces feelings of happiness and euphoria.
Kinds of workouts to begin with:
Not every workout has to be high intensity. Here are several low-impact workouts that are sure to improve your mood:
- Walking
- Stretching
- Swimming
- Bicycling
- Basic Aerobics
CHANGE YOUR MINDSET
When you are feeling the most down, the darkest emotions, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to adjust your mind to something more positive. There are several ways to do that.
Ways to improve your mindset:
- Journal your thoughts and feelings
- Keep track of your gratitudes
- Read scripture
- Pray
- Meditate on God’s word
- Call a friend
- Write a thank-you note
- Self-care (see THIS post for ideas)
