Move for Health
Move—Move Over, Move Up, Move Down. Whatever…just MOVE!
A few years ago, a humorous commercial by Minnesota Blue Cross Blue Shield featured a man awkwardly dancing in a doctor’s office. The catchy song playing in the background emphasized the importance of “moving your body.” I will spare you and not attempt to sing it.
It’s well done. Cute and catchy. The message is what really needs to catch.
If you are living a sedentary lifestyle because of the nature of your job and then the habits when you get home – it’s time to make a shift and take massive movement. Nothing too intense, but to move and move often.
Take the Step Toward Movement
A sedentary lifestyle is worse for your body than smoking. We are “sitting ourselves to death,” according to Dr. James Levine, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic.
It’s true. Inactivity is one of the major causes of inflammation in the body. This inflammation is a root cause of many major diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, and other auto-immune diseases.
Our drive to work, work, work, and not move about is a killer. If you have a sedentary job you must be proactive and intentional regarding movement. Get up every half hour and walk around, stretch, do a few jumping jacks…anything to get the heart pumping and the blood flowing.
You deserve to make space for yourself in your daily schedule, no matter the demands that others may place upon you. Side note; the more you make movement the more clear you can think and the quicker you can get your job accomplished – so your boss should welcome it!
