Service to Others is Good for Your Heart!
My husband Todd and I recently visited a part of Florida that a devastating hurricane recently affected. While we were a bit shocked at how many people were still recovering from the storm and reflected on how long it will really take to get back to a semblance of normalcy, the service of so many who willingly gave their time and resources to help their neighbors in the recovery effort inspired us.
It put me in mind of how serving others, true altruism, is so good for our heart, not to mention our overall wellbeing. When we help or serve others, our bloodstream releases the chemical oxytocin. You may not know the scientific name, but think of the feeling you get when you touch someone you love. That’s oxytocin.
This episode is on the shorter side, but I was so moved by what we saw, I wanted to share a bit of our experiences with you!
