Stand Up…Sit Down….Lie Down…Sit Back Up…Stand Up Again – Why does this seem so relatively easy when written out, but in all actuality, it’s difficult and nearly impossible for many people to accomplish? That is, without the use of their hands or getting on their knees.
This is called the SRT test, which stands for the sitting-rise test. The “real SRT” test is only sitting and rising. I added the lying down piece just for fun!
Why does it even matter? Well, a study by Brazilian physician Claudio Gil Araujo, was conducted with a little over 2,000 people between the ages of 51-80. The test proved not only to uncover the level of flexibility, balance, muscle strength and agility of each individual, but it showed that if people could NOT pass the test, they were twice as likely to die within the next six years.
Now, if you can’t pass the test, please don’t be discouraged. Instead, allow the SRT (sitting-rise test) to be a motivation to change your lifestyle. Make small, healthy changes daily and you will soon find yourself able to pass with flying colors. Collectively changing your diet, your exercise activity, sleep patterns, and stress load. It’s about being intentional and making yourself one of the most important appointments of the day. Your health matters! It actually creates a ripple effect throughout your family, community, and ultimately the world.
