It’s officially been two weeks since the New Year’s celebration. Many people made their “resolutions” and success plans for the upcoming year.
How are you doing on those plans thus far?
Studies show that the average person only sticks with their goals for the first 4-6 weeks and then they go back to their old habits. Health clubs bank on this statistic, literally!
Why does this short-lived change ring true for so many that rung in the New Year with resolutions? I believe it is partly due to the fact that people tend to resolve (which is the definition of resolution) their problems with the same answer and attitude from years prior.
To create permanent change, then the solutions, attitudes, and mindset need to change as well. People seem to become accustomed to focusing and looking in the rearview mirror of life. Emotions trap them in the reflections of the rearview mirror: past failures, insecurities, fear, and uncertainties. When you continue to look back you miss everything that is right in front of you.
And what is right in front of you?
You’ll find truth, success, certainty, self-esteem, and other growth opportunities. The path ahead may have curves and bumps, but with each curve and bump that you victoriously conquer you’re that much closer to your ultimate success goals.
I have a friend who has a great desire to see change but continues to focus on what happened in the past with anticipation that it will happen again in the future. With a mindset like that, be rest assured that the only change in life for my friend will be the change in seasons.
What you focus on will either keep you trapped in the past or it will free you to live in the present and be excited about the future.
No matter your goals for the year, focus on the path ahead so you don’t run into anything unexpectedly. Be intentionally prepared and don’t set yourself up for failure. Make attainable goals. Journal your progress along the way. Consider getting an accountability partner or coach. And don’t forget to celebrate each small goal that brings you closer to your ultimate achievement. Break the rearview mirror if you must….it’s time for you to live for today and the days ahead!
